PANCHAKARMA |
|
Preserving the health of healthy individuals and management of diseased is the aim of ayurveda. Status of tridosha (body humours – vata, pitta & kapha) defines health or disease i.e. a balance state of dosha called as svastha (healthy) whereas disturbed doshic balance denotes diseased. Ayurved advocates treatment for any clinical condition through shamana (pacification) and sodhana (purification). Pacification of body humours (vata, pitta & kapha) by administration of medicines as shamana whereas elimination of body humours through their nearest route is sodhana. Elimination of body humours out of the body is the unique feature of ayurved. There are five such procedures called as panchakarma. Pancha means five and karma means procedure. The five procedures are vamana (therapeutic emesis), virechana (therapeutic purgation), basti (therapeutic enemas), nasya (errhine therapy) and raktha mokshana (blood letting). All these five purificatory procedures play vital role in curative, preventive as well as rejuvinative measures. However there are several other procedures, which are being administered under the name of panchakarma. |
